Built on Mike Peters’ passionate vocals, ringing guitars and openly political edge, it helped define the group’s mix of heart, rebellion and communal uplift. Songs such as the title track, Knife Edge and Spirit of ’76 show a band balancing urgency with melody, while the record’s sense of conviction gave it lasting appeal beyond the alternative rock scene. Widely regarded as one of the band’s key releases, Strength remains a potent example of mid-80s guitar rock with purpose.

Genre: Pop & Rock

Review

AllMusic rating:

          AllMusic users:

          (108 votes)

          Read the AllMusic.com review

Artist: The Alarm

Label: CBS, I.R.S. Released in 1984, it channels post-punk urgency into big, rallying songs that helped define the band’s early identity and wider appeal. Powered by Mike Peters’ passionate vocals, chiming guitars and a strong sense of purpose, the album balances grit with melody and conviction. Songs such as Sixty Eight Guns and Where Were You Hiding When the Storm Broke? became emblematic of the band’s anthemic style, helping Declaration build a lasting reputation as a fervent and memorable alternative rock record.

Artist: The Alarm

Label: I.R.S.
