Sound Collage

Sound collage is a form of experimental music which uses sound as its primary medium. It combines disparate audio sources and samples to create a new sonic landscape. Sound collage has its roots in the early 20th century avant-garde and experimental music of composers such as Edgard Varèse, John Cage, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the practice of creating sound collages was popularized by the likes of John Oswald and Christian Marclay, who used record players and turntables to create new musical compositions. In the late 1990s, the use of sampling technology allowed sound collage to become a more accessible and widely practiced form of music. Today, sound collage is a popular form of musical expression, and it has been used in a variety of musical genres, from hip-hop to ambient music.
