Sermon
Sermon is a musical style from the Dominican Republic that emerged in the late 19th century. It is a blend of traditional Caribbean rhythms with European classical music. Its roots are in the religious music of the Catholic Church, with a focus on the oratorio, or sermon. It is a vocal form, sung in a call and response style, with a leader or narrator and a chorus. The lyrics are typically in Spanish, and often incorporate biblical passages. Sermon music is still performed in the Dominican Republic today, as well as in other Caribbean countries.
