  • Although she was one of the strongest and most moving jazz singers, Dinah Washington suffered especially from unimaginative and random accompanying arrangements. Many of their EmArcy recordings, especially those with the trumpeters Clifford Brown or Clark Terry, were great performances, but their collections were affected by the inappropriate accompaniment.

This collection of twelve blues pieces gives a one-sided picture of her insofar as it contains none of her ballads. But against the background of the big band the power and verve of her singing becomes clear and proves her reputation as the best blues singer. During the 50s they were considered R&B, but the arranger and bandleader Fred Norman wrote these wonderful jazz pieces for them in 1962, shortly before their death. It's strong material and Washington surpasses itself and swings, with her voice repeatedly rising to these mighty climaxes for which she was so famous. The material contains much of the traditional repertoire - Big Bill Broonzy, Leroy Carr and Lil Green are represented - and in addition there is a nine-minute "Nobody Knows The Way I Feel This Morning" that is unique in their discography.
