  • The band name is derived from the abbreviation Fugazi, which is an American slang term from the Vietnam War. Fugazi here was an acronym for: "Fucked Up, Got Ambushed, Zipped In" and referred to a hopeless combat situation.
Fugazi comes from the Washington punk and hardcore scene of the 1980s.

Releases appear on the record label Dischord, whose founder is Fugazi member Ian MacKaye, who gained notoriety with various Washington punk bands (e.g. Minor Threat) in earlier times. The freedom of action provided by the non-commercial label is used by the band to preserve certain principles, such as low concert prices, concerts without age restrictions, and no mass events.[1] Various free gigs (e.g. protest action at the beginning of the 2nd Gulf War in 1992 in front of the White House in Washington, D. C.) are also possible in this way. Despite all this, Fugazi enjoys a high level of recognition in the hardcore punk scene, not only in the USA, but on almost every continent. For many other music groups of this scene Fugazi has a role model character.
