Public Enemy is an American hip hop group founded in 1982 by Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Professor Griff, DJ Lord and the S1W group. The group was among the most influential and controversial rap groups of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Public Enemy's breakthrough album was 1988's It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, which featured the hit single "Fight the Power". The album was acclaimed for its politically charged lyrics and for its innovative production, which incorporated samples from a variety of sources. It reached number 1 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart and number 42 on the Billboard 200.

In 1990, the group released their third album, Fear of a Black Planet, which featured the singles "Welcome to the Terrordome" and "911 Is a Joke". The album was highly acclaimed for its hard-hitting political commentary and was certified platinum by the RIAA.

Public Enemy's fourth album, Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black, was released in 1991. It featured the singles "Can't Truss It" and "By the Time I Get to Arizona". The album was certified platinum and featured a more hardcore sound than their previous releases.

Other notable albums by Public Enemy include 1994's Muse Sick-n-Hour Mess Age, 1998's He Got Game, 2002's Revolverlution, and 2012's Most of My Heroes Still Don't Appear on No Stamp.

Some of Public Enemy's most popular songs include "Fight the Power", "Welcome to the Terrordome", "Don't Believe the Hype", "Bring the Noise", and "911 Is a Joke".

An interesting fact about Public Enemy is that they are credited as the first rap group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
