The record successfully fused the experimental sounds of the Moog synthesiser with ethnic percussion which resulted in an album of stunning originality.

The record was an influence on successive generations of musicians and it continues to inspire.

The album is a mesmerizing journey through mystical, atmospheric soundscapes. With the Moog synthesizer gliding like shimmering water, the title track evokes ancient, dreamlike gardens filled with ethereal light and subtle percussion. As the track unfolds, the listener drifts through layers of electronics, Rhodes piano tones, and tribal rhythms, all of which coalesce into an immersive, spiritual meditation that remains hypnotic from start to finish.

On the flip side, “Vuh” unfolds as a majestic cathedral-like mass, with massive organ drones reverberating through space, punctuated by cymbal swells and distant percussion. Recorded in a medieval church, its resonant tones conjure a sense of timeless ritual and awe. Together, the two extended compositions frame the album as an elemental and deeply contemplative work—a mystical sound journey that marks a powerful early milestone in ambient and new-age music.

Artist: Popol Vuh

Label: Esoteric Recordings

Format: LP

Units: 1

Country: UK

Genre:
          Pop & Rock

Style:

            Ambient,

            Krautrock

A In Den Gärten Pharaos
B Vuh

Condition: Brand New

Ships from: Melbourne

Description

Release details

Tracklist

Towards the end of the 60s the classically trained pianist Florian Fricke worked as a music and film critic before he decided to produce his own music. Like many German musicians of that time (Eberhard Schoener, Cluster, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze) he felt attracted by electronics to create his own sound worlds. He could afford a Moog III. At the time, he was convinced that he could cover the entire range of human emotions with this electronic instrument. Gerhard Augustin from Liberty Records offered Fricke the opportunity to produce a Moog album. So Fricke founded Popol Vuh in spring 1969

In the keyboarder Frank Fiedler he found a well-equipped technician who supported him. Holger Trülzsch joined the band as a percussionist. Fricke took a bold step, abandoned all musical conventions and entered new territories. Endless experimental sessions finally led to the trippy album "Affenstunde" (1970). An album that still appeals to young adventurous listeners. Both the name of the group and the title of the album (Monkey Hour) refer to the holy book of Maya Popol Vuh, which inspired the spiritually minded Florian Fricke.

Reviews

"Neo-psychedelic Julian Cope praised the debut Affenstunde (1970) once than an album with 'incredible Sounds and impressions that can be heard with nothing Are comparable to the previous." (Good Times, June / July 2019)

Genre: Pop & Rock

Artist: Popol Vuh

Label: Klimt Records

Format: LP

Units: 1

Country: France

Genre:
          Pop & Rock

Style:

            Ambient,

            Minimal

Aa Dream Part 4
Ab Dream Part 5
Ac Dream Part 49
B Affenstunde
