Nina Simone was an iconic American singer, songwriter, and civil rights activist. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in 1933, she was the sixth of eight children. She began playing the piano at age 3, and soon began taking formal lessons, eventually graduating from Juilliard School of Music in 1954.

Simone's career was largely defined by her civil rights activism. Her music explored topics such as racial injustice, poverty, and war. In 1964, Simone released her album Mississippi Goddam, which featured her most famous song, "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free". Other standout albums include Wild is the Wind (1966), Here Comes the Sun (1971), and Fodder on My Wings (1982).

One interesting fact about Nina Simone is that she was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. She was also the first black woman to have her music featured on the cover of a major magazine (Time Magazine).
