Mel Tormé Vinyl Records

Mel Tormé was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and composer who was known as “The Velvet Fog” due to his smooth, rich voice. He was born in 1925 in Chicago, Illinois, and began his career as a child performer on radio, in films, and in vaudeville. He was a prolific composer and wrote hundreds of songs, including the classic holiday tune “The Christmas Song” (also known as “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire”).

Tormé released a series of critically acclaimed albums throughout his career, including the 1965 LP Mel Tormé and The Marty Paich Dek-Tette, which featured the Grammy-nominated song “Careless Hands.” His other standout albums include 1962's I Dig the Duke/I Dig the Count, 1967's Mel Tormé Swings Shubert Alley, and his final studio album, 1995's Singing with the Big Bands.

An interesting fact about Mel Tormé is that he was an accomplished drummer as well as a singer, and he often played drums on his own recordings. He was also a noted jazz scat singer, a skill which he showcased on his 1972 single “The Lady Is a Tramp.”

Condition: Brand New

Ships from: Melbourne

Description

Release details

Tracklist

Mel Torme9's Swings Shubert Alley catches him in 1960, turning Broadway material into a proper jazz-swing set at a point when his Verve work was in especially strong form. Rather than treating these songs as theatre keepsakes, Torme9 brings quick wit, sharp phrasing and real momentum to music associated with New York's Shubert Alley stage culture, backed here by the Marty Paich Orchestra.

The album's appeal is in that meeting of polish and drive. Standards by Lerner and Loewe, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Cole Porter become vehicles for Torme9's rhythmic precision and easy authority, with songs such as On the Street Where You Live, Hello, Young Lovers and Too Darn Hot showing how naturally he could move between show-tune elegance and jazz phrasing. Sources also place this among the most admired studio albums of his Verve period, and it still stands out for how confidently it bridges Broadway and big-band sophistication.

This Verve Vault edition makes that history count on vinyl: it is cut from the original analog tapes by Ryan K.
