Madlib is an American hip hop producer, multi-instrumentalist, and rapper from Oxnard, California. He is well-known for his prolific and diverse production, as well as his collaborations with many other prominent hip hop artists. Madlib has produced and released several albums and EPs, both solo and with several groups, including Quasimoto, Yesterdays New Quintet, and Madvillain.
Madlib's first solo album was the 2003 release, Shades of Blue: Madlib Invades Blue Note. This album featured him reinterpreting classic Blue Note Records recordings and was widely praised for its creative approach and production. He followed this up with 2004's The Unseen, which featured him rapping over his own beats and became one of his most critically acclaimed albums. Other standout albums include Madvillainy (2004) with MF DOOM, The Turnaround (2005), Beat Konducta Vol. 1-2 (2006), and Medicine Show No. 1-13 (2010-2011).
