It introduced her unmistakable raspy voice through a style that pulled neo-soul, contemporary R&B, funk and hip hop-minded soul into the same conversation. With more than seven million copies sold worldwide and “I Try” becoming the breakthrough single that earned Gray a Grammy, this is the record that fixed her place at the turn of the millennium.

What still makes the album worth returning to is how flexible it sounds without losing its personality. The songs move easily from the gritty groove of “Do Something” to the wounded calm of “Still,” while “Why Didn’t You Call Me” shows how naturally Gray could balance direct songwriting with off-centre phrasing. Several sources also point to the album’s emotional candour: relationship songs that feel lived-in rather than polished, carried by a voice that critics immediately singled out for its character and unpredictability.

For vinyl listeners, this edition matters because the album’s warm, organic production suits the format especially well. It is presented here as a remastered 180g pressing, with the Music On Vinyl reissue history helping keep one of the key late-1990s neo-soul debuts in print.

Features

LP, 180g, Black Vinyl

Remastered reissue

Music On Vinyl edition

Includes insert

Reviews

written entirely by Gray, On How Life Is is a 10-song embrace of uncontainable warmth and honest reflection – Pitchfork

Artist: Macy Gray

Label: Epic, Music On Vinyl

Format: LP

Units: 1

Country: Europe

Genre:
          Hip Hop &
