  • A Dodge Charger's fierce race battle against a Ford Mustang, featuring the super bull Bullitt, who kicks nasty darlings off the track and delivers them directly to their cremation. The threatening clatter of countless flying hubcaps and leading actor Steve McQueen, who stirs grimly in the manual transmission and drifts through Frisco's mountain roads with screeching rubbers - this is how Hollywood staged one of the longest and most dramatic hunts with potent tin car bodies when the electronic instruments ABS and slip control were still playing in the future.

In contrast, Lalo Schifrin's music for the film is acoustically fully present and just as tingling as the plot, embedding people, spaces and events in a musical context. Example "Bullitt": Already the metrically interlaced main theme in mysterious coolness brings a character into the light, who scans every situation with sensitive alertness and switches to offensive in a flash.

The musical scenes only play on loose Latin terrain in the beginning. The rhythmic structure gradually condenses to a harder pavement by clicking, pounding and hammering. The legendary flute set creates a balancing mildness by laying airy clouds over the sharpened mix. Hearing tip "Shifting Gears": Here Schifrin can be overheard while tuning, how he pimped up a hooked bossa to a round running rock sound.

This Speakers Corner production was made using analog master tape and 100% pure analog mastering.

Recording: December 1968 at Western Recorders, Hollywood, by Lee Herschberg
    Production: Jimmy Hilliard

    Reviews

"With absolute top musicians Schiffrin realised the partly hard rocking, sometimes fiery latinizing score in 1968. The remastering sounds extraordinarily contoured in its strict left/right stereo, the sound with the razor-sharp horn section really comes on." (Audio, December 2017)

"The twelve Tracks of the album - on the backside of the Covers are stills of 'Bullitt' to see - move between the well-known main theme, fast-paced tracks (probably the best sound sample here is 'Shifting Gears') and Latin sounds in general." (Good Times, December 2017 / January 2018)

"The production of the heavy record is great, the sound is great too. Dynamism and transparency are impeccable." (Stereo, March 2018)
