King Sunny Ade
Nigerian prince and guitarist/bandleader, together with fellow countryman/competitor Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey the most important ambassador of hypnotic juju music from the early 1980s.
Creator of about thirty hit albums, but after the commercial flop of the viii experimental AURA, Island cancelled the contract and it became quiet around the Nigerian megastar. However, he made a comeback at the end of the eighties. He gave memorable concerts at Festival Mundial and Parkpop in 1992 and 94 respectively with his 20-strong band New African Beats.
In the mid-1990s, he was the head of an empire of companies and began to concern himself with musician's rights. In '97, he recorded the song The Way Forward together with some Nigerian stars, to draw attention to the social problems in his country. On GEMS FROM THE CLASSIC YEARS, Abe pours material from the 1967-1974 period into four long medleys.
