  • In 1970, Freddie Hubbard's career reached a noticeable fork in the road. Ten years after making his album debut with "Open Sesame," the trumpeter already had an impressive record to his name: Around a dozen albums for Blue Note and Atlantic as a bandleader, participation in groundbreaking free jazz records by Coltrane and Ornette Coleman, the shaping of his own tone between hardbop, soul and fusion

From here, Hubbard finally set off on his popular phase on CTI Records. At the same time, however, this MPS album towers as a milestone at the crossroads. We experience a musician who acts very spontaneously in a top-class quintet line-up - the Villingen recordings are actually only a "by-product" of his European tour at that time. Those familiar with the dreamy versions of the standard "Without A Song" will be thrilled by the band's unbridled, thirteen-minute joy of playing, crowned by Hubbard's dialogue with his saxophonist Eddie Daniels and the breathless impetus of Louis Hayes on drums

This verve is further enhanced by the hard-bopping frenzy of "Just One Of Those Things" with incredible staccato chains of the protagonist. Hubbard dedicated the teasing "Blues For Duane" to his son, bassist Richard Davis takes away any earthiness with a lighthearted pulse. In sweeping arcs Hubbard, congenially supported by Roland Hanna's piano harmonies, reveals his melodic radiance in "The Things We Did Last Summer", before Davis gets another star hour in a pensive finale.
