Indian Classical

Indian classical music is a genre of South Asian music that has been evolving since ancient times. It is traditionally divided into two distinct categories: Hindustani music, which developed in the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent; and Carnatic music, which developed in the southern parts of the subcontinent. The two styles share many common elements and principles, but they also have their own unique characteristics. The musical form is based on improvisation and it is characterized by its use of raga (melodic scales) and tala (rhythmic cycles). Indian classical music has a long history, with evidence of its practice going back to the Vedic period (around 1500 BCE). It has since been used in various art forms, such as dance, theatre, and religious ceremonies.
