Hindustani

Hindustani music is one of the two major branches of Indian classical music. It originated in northern India and is heavily influenced by Persian and Arabic music. It is characterized by its complex rhythms, improvisation, and its use of tala (rhythmic cycles). It is primarily vocal-based, although some instruments are used, such as the sitar, tabla, sarod, veena, and harmonium. Hindustani music is said to be the originator of North Indian classical music, and is the basis of popular forms of music such as Bollywood and qawwali. It is also the basis of many forms of South Asian devotional music. Its history can be traced back to the Vedic period, and it has been a major influence on Indian music for centuries.
