In 1957 Miles Davis had an engagement at the Club Saint-Germain in Paris and a wonderful concert appearance at the Olympia. During his stay in the vicinity of Saint-Germain-des-Près, Miles came into contact with many artists and cultural workers from the circle of modern existentialism. To it belonged also director Louis Malle, who had just finished his first movie "Elevator to the scaffold". Jean-Paul Rappeneau, jazz fan and Louis Malles assistant at the time, suggested asking Miles Davis if he would be willing to create the soundtrack for the film. A private screening was organized. On 4 December 1957, Miles Davis brought three French jazz musicians - Barney Wilen (tenor saxophone), René Urtreger (piano), Pierre Michelot (bass) and his American compatriot Kenny Clarke (drums) - to the recording studio Le Poste Parisien without having prepared anything. Miles Davis gave the musicians only a few rudimentary harmony sequences, which he had arranged in the hotel room. The shots were taken in a very informal atmosphere in just one night. The soundtrack was not released as a stand-alone album in the USA, but ten tracks from it formed one side of the record "Jazz Track", which received a Grammy nomination in 1960 as Best Jazz Performance in Solo or Small Band."Elevator to scaffold" was a great artistic success.
