Dire Straits was an English rock band formed in 1977 by singer and songwriter Mark Knopfler and his brother David Knopfler. The band quickly rose to fame with the release of their debut album, Dire Straits, in 1978. The album featured the hit single “Sultans of Swing”, which became an instant classic.

The band’s second album, Communiqué, was released in 1979 and featured the singles “Lady Writer” and “Once Upon a Time in the West”. Their third album, Making Movies, was released in 1980 and spawned the hit singles “Romeo and Juliet” and “Tunnel of Love”.

The band’s fourth album, Love over Gold, was released in 1982 and featured the hit single “Private Investigations”. Their fifth album, Brothers in Arms, was released in 1985 and featured the hit singles “Money for Nothing” and “Walk of Life”.

Dire Straits released their final album, On Every Street, in 1991. The album featured the hit single “Calling Elvis”.

Dire Straits was one of the most successful bands of the 1980s and is often credited with helping to popularize the blues-rock sound. Their most successful album was Brothers in Arms, which sold over 30 million copies and was the first album to sell one million copies on compact disc.

An interesting fact about Dire Straits is that the band was never officially inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, despite being nominated several times.
