“This conceptual album, arguably the most influential of his works according to the BBC, was intended as a soundtrack for imaginary films. Excerpts from it were later used in films by directors such as John Woo and Derek Jarman. The album is a loose compilation of material that consists of short pieces of one and a half to just over four minutes and is thus the opposite of the long ambient pieces for which he later became known. The compositional styles and the equipment used can also be found in Eno's work on David Bowie's classic "Low" from 1977 again. In contrast to Eno's later ambient works, "Music for Films" uses a broader palette of sounds, with his studio exercises being instrumented by Rhett Davies, John Cale, Phil Collins, Robert Fripp, Fred Frith, Percy Jones, Bill MacCormick, Dave Mattacks, Paul Rudolph and Rod Melvin.
