  • For A Day At the Races, the fifth studio album from British rock icons Queen, the band extended the magic of A Night At The Opera into a record often considered a sequel. The huge success of the previous album, which saw Freddie Mercury win his second Ivor Novello Award for "Bohemian Rhapsody", gave the group a much-needed confidence boost as they began work on this project. The album, released in December 1976, saw the group pushing themselves further by dipping into gospel, ragtime and hard rock

A Night At The Opera was followed by, what else, as A Day At The Races. Queen once again took inspiration from the Marx Brothers and replicated the chronology of their films, although as Roger Taylor assured Supersonic Saturday Scene viewers, their next album would not be called Room Service or Duck Soup.

The whole band was in high spirits when the sessions for the new album began at The Manor in July 1976, before mixing was again completed at Sarm East and post-production at Wessex Studios.

Once again, the operatic and torch-laden elements of Queen came to the fore. They had cleared another hurdle with flying colours. And if all that wasn't enough, Groucho Marx sent the group a handwritten note congratulating them on their excellent taste.
