In an unpredictable world, a new album from The Orb is a constant. On what could be their millionth release, founding member Alex Paterson and longtime collaborator Michael Rendall deliver a highlight of their storied catalog with "Buddhist Hipsters".
Inspired by a dream with Roger Eno (who features on the album), the album captures a therapeutic and joyful creative process. Paterson praises Rendall as a genius and credits her chemistry for creating an album reminiscent of fan favorite U.F. Orb in scope and energy.
Opener "Spontaneously Combust" features Steve Hillage's signature guitar, vintage synths and a rare sample from the Book and Record Bar in West Norwood. "P1" evolves into a cosmic drum-and-bass cyclone, while "Baraka," an ode to a resilient, blind Kenyan rhino, offers retro synth energy. Live favorite "A Sacred Choice" is a roots reggae jam featuring Youth, Paul Ferguson and vocals by Eric Von Skywalker.
Arabebonics, a cinematic hip-hop track, features the vocals of death row inmate Rrome Alone, recreated by Rendall using artificial intelligence. Andy Cain lends his voice to the melancholy "It's Coming Soon", while "Doll's House" pulsates with nostalgic warmth.
On "The Oort Cloud (Too Night)", the duo processes Trevor Waters' lovers rock classics into deep New York house, supported by Dr. D. The ambient journey "Under the Bed" with Andy Falconer dives deep into cosmic space, while "Khàron" with Roger Eno's minimalist piano brings the journey to a radiant conclusion.
"Buddhist Hipsters" is a rich, cross-genre journey - another Orb vacation for the mind.
