Guillermo Portabales (1911-1970) was a unique artist of the Cuban guajira. His distinctive voice and delicate guitar playing defined this music .... and made it popular. One of his most famous songs, El Carretero ', has been covered by a number of notable artists, including Senegalese artists Orchestra Baobab and Cheikh Lô. His music has had a great influence on the musicians who later achieved worldwide fame together as the Buena Vista Social Club.Early in his career, portabales was stylistically variable. He sang tango, bolero, son. But when he realized that he enchanted his audience most with guajira, he had found his style. He played the guajira in his own way, with added melodies, but less directly in your face. Not least of this, he was called the founder of the Guajira De Salon, a new kind of Guajira that was danced to in the cities and told of life, love, sorrow, joy and work.
